In reality, we are still trying to find out if we share the Universe with other sentient creatures. To date, most SETI searches have looked for radio signals from distant civilizations. Recent advances in our own technology have allowed SETI scientists to search in different ways. New detectors have made possible the search for short pulses of visible light. Other new technology will certainly improve upon the searches that are already underway.
